Our Story

OUR MISSION:  Coro's mission is to excite northern New Mexicans with unique choral chamber music from diverse composers while developing community members as musicians.  We aim to achieve excellence in the music we create, perform programs that educate audiences and expose them to diverse musical traditions, and invite broad community engagement through accessible programming.

HOW WE BEGAN:  Coro de Cámara traces its beginnings to a small group of madrigal singers originally formed by Los Alamos Choral Society director Jacob Evans.  The Los Alamos Madrigal Singers performed at a variety of local venues in succeeding years until Steve Coggeshall became the director of the group under its new name, Los Alamos Chamber Ensemble, in 1985.  The name Coro de Cámara (Spanish for chamber chorus) was adopted in 1989.

Coro has enjoyed the leadership of a number of directors over the years, each of whom brought their unique vision and talents to this versatile vocal ensemble.

         - Rebecca Rollett, 1989 - 1995

        - Douglas “Dusty” Fisher, 1995 - 1998

        - Cora Harms, 1998 - 2003

        - Catherine Robinson, 2003 - 2011

        - Guest conductors Karen Marrolli, Steven Paxton, and Joe Cox, 2011-2012

        - Andrew Alegria, 2013-2014

        - Nylea Butler-Moore, 2014 - present

CORO TODAY: Under the current artistic direction of Nylea Butler-Moore, Coro's work represents a wide range of repertoire, from Renaissance, Baroque, Romantic, and Contemporary to the best of jazz, Broadway, and global. Nylea strives to expand Coro's musical horizons through challenging and sometimes lesser-known music, giving singers and audiences alike a unique experience of culture, language, and musical expression.  The occasional addition of the spoken word and instrumental and choral collaboration enhance Coro’s singing and provide a richness and depth that lead to memorable performances.

Nylea became Coro's Artistic Director in 2014.  We look forward to many more years of fruitful collaboration.
